Abstract:

Competition among companies is growing globally, with the need to increase productivity and efficiency in the product sector. However, there is also a growing concern about global warming and the depletion of natural resources, as well as their effects on human health. In this context, all human activities that involve intense usage of resources must take into account sustainability as one of the decision criteria. This work presents the application of decision-making methods to define the best product mix in the agricultural machinery industry. With this objective, the current schedule of the production line was identified, along with the production flow, by performing an inventory analysis and an environmental impact study (endpoint). A total of seven alternatives for the production mix of grain trailers were defined, considering different materials and production processes. The selection of the best schedule according to the different criteria was performed through the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and data envelopment analysis (DEA) to evaluate the managerial implications for decision making. The results obtained through AHP identified a single alternative as being the best, which facilitates the decision making. The DEA method identified two alternatives as the most efficient, and in this case the manager can choose between a product mix that generates lesser environmental impact or greater profitability. Although applied to agricultural industry, the presented methodology can be easily adapted to other activities related to the built environment, such as construction industry.

Abstract:

Achieving sustainability is currently one of the main objectives, so a consensus between different environmental, social, and economic aspects is necessary. The construction sector is one of the main sectors responsible for environmental impacts worldwide. This paper proposes the life cycle assessment (LCA) and comparison of four bridge deck alternatives for different span lengths to determine which ones are the most sustainable solutions. The ReCiPe method is used to conduct the life cycle analysis, by means of which the impact value is obtained for every alternative and span length. The Ecoinvent 3.3 database has been used. The life cycle has been divided into four phases: manufacturing, construction, use and maintenance, and end of life. The associated uncertainties are considered, and the results are shown in both midpoint and endpoint approaches. The results of our research show that for span lengths less than 17 m, the best alternative is the prestressed concrete solid slab. For span lengths between 17 and 25 m, since the box-girder solution is not used, then the prestressed concrete lightened slab is the best alternative. For span lengths between 25 and 40 m, the best solution depends on the percentage of recycled structural steel. If this percentage is greater than 90%, then the best alternative is the composite box-girder bridge deck. However, if the percentage is lower, the cleanest alternative is the prestressed concrete box-girder deck. Therefore, the results show the importance of recycling and reusing structural steel in bridge deck designs.

Abstract:

The aim of this paper is to establish an international framework for sustainable project management in engineering, to make up the lack of research in this field, and to propose a scientific theoretical basis for the establishment of a new project management system. The article adopts literature review, mathematical programming algorithm and case study as the research method. The literature review applied the visual clustering research method and analyzed the results of 21-year research in this field. As a result, the project management system was found to have defects and deficiencies. A mathematical model was established to analyze the composition and elements of the optimized international project management system. The case study research selected large bridges for analysis and verified the superiority and practicability of the theoretical system. Thus, the goal of sustainable development of bridges was achieved. The value of this re-search lies in establishing a comprehensive international project management system model; truly integrating sustainable development with project management; providing new research frames and management models to promote the sustainable development of the construction industry.

Preface to ”Sustainable Construction”

Construction is one of the main sectors that generates greenhouse gases. This industry consumes large amounts of raw materials, such as stone, timber, water, etc. Additionally, infrastructure should provide service over many years without safety problems. Therefore, their correct design, construction, maintenance, and dismantling are essential to reducing economic, environmental, and societal consequences. That is why promoting sustainable construction has recently become extremely important. To help address and resolve these types of questions, this book is comprised of five chapters that explore new ways of reducing the environmental impacts caused by the construction sector, as well to promote social progress and economic growth. The chapters collect papers included in the “Sustainable Construction II” Special Issue of the Sustainability journal. We would like to thank both the MDPI publishing and editorial staff for their excellent work, as well as the 18 authors who collaborated in its preparation. The papers cover a wide spectrum of issues related to the use of sustainable materials in construction, the optimization of designs based on sustainable indicators, the life-cycle assessment, the decision-making processes that integrate economic, social, and environmental aspects, and the promotion of durable materials that reduce future maintenance.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

University education related to architecture, engineering and construction is changing rapidly, especially in these challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methodologies are changing: competency-based education is being imposed, online teaching, and affecting active participation of students in the learning process, among others. In fact, the education provided today at universities should be the basis for future graduates to be able to practice their profession in the coming decades. It cannot, therefore, be taught the same as it has been taught for the last 50 years.

In this educational context, the concept of “smart construction” takes on special importance. It is a concept that is associated with digital design, information and communication technologies, artificial intelligence, BIM, Lean Construction, prefabrication, drones, robotization, the Internet of Things and automation, innovation and sustainability, among many other concepts. Among these concepts, one that particularly interests me is the association with new construction methods (a term that includes new products and new construction procedures). They aim to improve business efficiency, quality, customer satisfaction, environmental performance, sustainability and predictability of delivery times. Therefore, modern construction methods are more than just a particular focus on the product. They engage people to seek improvements, through better processes, in construction delivery and execution. For all this technological revolution to be possible, it is essential to change the current educational methods in universities, especially in those engineering studies related to the field of construction. The challenge is twofold: on the one hand, to teach those trends in smart construction that will become a reality in the coming years and, on the other hand, to change the way of teaching at the university, adapting to these new technologies.

This Special Issue aims at promoting original and high-quality papers on new trends in Architecture, Engineering and Education from a multidisciplinary perspective. In particular, the Special Issue seeks to collect best educational practices, innovations in the learning process, problem- and project-based education, collaborative learning, etc. It is about collecting the trends towards which university education related to the world of construction is heading.

We cordially invite you to submit a high-quality original research paper or review to this Special Issue,“ New Trends in Smart Construction Education and Research”.

ABSTRACT

Sustainable design of infrastructures has become a major matter of study since the recent establishment of the Agenda 2030. This paper provides a systematic literature review on the use of multi-criteria decision making techniques used so far for the sustainable design of bridges. Special attention is put as well on how the reviewed studies assess the sustainable performance of bridge designs along their life cycle from the economic, the environmental and the social perspective. Although SAW and AHP are recurrently used in the sustainable assessment of bridges, the analysis of the most recent articles show that the application of TOPSIS and PROMETHEE techniques are gaining increasing relevance for such purpose. Most of the studies focus on the research of the construction and the maintenance stage of bridges. However, a need for further analysis is identified when it comes to the assessment of the impacts resulting from the End of Life cycle stage of bridges from a sustainable point of view. The use of intuitionistic and neutrosophic logic have been detected as emerging alternatives to the fuzzy approach of decision making problems.
